HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Republican candidate for governor says he opposes giving tax incentives to retail developments.
Attorney General Henry McMaster said during a campaign stop in Sun City Hilton Head on Saturday that his office wrote an opinion last year that a law to give economic development incentives to retailers would likely be declared unconstitutional by a court.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported that McMaster told the gathering he thinks such a law would give an unfair advantage to some retailers.
A bill being considered in the Senate would allow tax incentives similar to those given to new manufacturing plants to be used to lure large retail shopping centers.
