ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Winthrop University has canceled all on-campus classes for Monday after firefighters battled a blaze that destroyed the roof of a 2-year-old classroom building.
The roof of Owens Hall was extinguished Sunday afternoon. Winthrop and the city of Rock Hill said in a news release the fire has been difficult to fight because of the building's multilayer roofing system. One firefighter was treated overnight for injuries when he fell on steps inside the building.
A cause of the fire has not been determined. University officials say they have not been able to determine the extent or cost of the damage to the $6.5 million 32,000-square-foot building.
Classes scheduled for Owens Hall and two nearby buildings are being moved for the remainder of the semester.
