CHARLESTON, SC - CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Relatives of firefighters who died battling a blaze at a 2007 South Carolina furniture store meet with state investigators next week about whether criminal negligence was involved.
Louis Mulkey and eight other firefighters died at the Sofa Super Store. His father, Mike Mulkey, said Monday he is also questioning the city police department's investigation of a fire involving its own fire department.
Mulkey says there needs to be accountability for the deaths. Relatives went to local prosecutor Scarlett Wilson last year, and Mulkey says she asked for a State Law Enforcement Division review.
A separate report by a group of experts hired by the city found that inadequate training and outdated tactics led to the deaths. It did not mention criminal negligence.
