Convicted killer could be released from prison early

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man convicted in a brutal murder of a teenager from Brunswick County, NC could be released from prison early.

John Paul Counts and John Gamble sexually assaulted, beat and stabbed 18-year-old Amy Frink in 1994.  They then proceeded to run over her body with her own car several times.

Counts was released from prison in 2008 as part of a program called MAPP, the Mutual Agreement Parole Program.  He only served nine years of his 30-year sentence.  The program aims to prepare model inmates for release on parole if they keep a clean record while behind bars.

Gamble is up for parole later this month, which is earlier than expected.
