Coast Guard in SC conducts pollution exercise

CHARLESTON, SC - CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The Coast Guard and private companies are conducting a pollution response exercise on the South Carolina coast.

Units from Coast Guard Sector Charleston, Moran Towing and Moran Environmental Recovery demonstrate the Coast Guard's Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System on Thursday on the Cooper River in North Charleston.

The recovery system is designed to be used in a variety of vessels in an oil spill. It's 1 of 19 the Coast Guard has stationed around the United States.

Once on the scene, booms, skimmers and pumps allow the recovery of spilled oil to begin in less than an hour.
