BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - A Navy pilot who had been overseas for eight months missed the birth of his daughter in South Carolina by about eight hours.
30-year-old Lt. Will Rietveld learned his wife was pregnant with their second child before he deployed to Afghanistan last year.
His 28-year-old wife Laura gave birth Monday to their daughter Megan before Rietveld landed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort.
The family had hoped to be together for the birth but Megan arrived about 10 days early.
Rietveld left the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in Seattle and flew to New Mexico over the weekend. But he couldn't fly home to Beaufort on Sunday because of bad weather on the East Coast.
