Charleston AFB hosts 700 children for Earth Day

CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Air Force base is hosting more than 700 children in celebration of Earth Day.

Officials at Charleston Air Force base say Wednesday's event will feature exhibits by various government and environmental organizations. They will help educate the children on subjects such as professions dealing with the environment and matters involving the world around them.

State and federal agencies taking part include the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the Charleston County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The event will take place on the base's picnic grounds.

A national 40th anniversary celebration of Earth Day is set for April 22.
