Annual luncheon honors SC's women in politics

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - An annual luncheon that honors South Carolina's female politicians will feature the 89-year-old mayor of a Canadian city.

The guest speaker on Wednesday will be Hazel McCallion, the longest-serving mayor of Mississauga in Ontario. She was first elected to lead the Toronto suburb in 1978. A reception will honor South Carolina's three dozen female mayors.

The luncheon is a fundraiser of the Women's Legislative Caucus, which awards $1,000 scholarships to female students attending in-state colleges. South Carolina continues to ranks last nationwide in the percentage of female legislators with 17.

Caucus chairwoman Rep. Joan Brady says several hundred people are expected to attend. The 10th annual luncheon is named after the late Rep. Jean Laney Harris of Cheraw, who died in 1997.
