COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - It doesn't appear South Carolina is a winner in the first round of the federal "Race to the Top" education competition.
A source told The Associated Press on Monday that the U.S. Department of Education has picked Delaware and Tennessee as the initial winners. The source declined to be identified because not all finalists had been contacted yet.
At noon, a spokesman for South Carolina Education Department said his agency had not yet received a call.
South Carolina was among 16 finalists for the awards. It had applied for $300 million.
The competition is part of President Obama's economic stimulus law. It is designed to reward states for innovative reforms to improve student achievement.
South Carolina can reapply for the second round of grants.
