Heavy rain threatens to topple records in East

BOSTON - BOSTON (AP) - Residents along the East Coast are bracing for heavy rains, flooding and the wettest March on record in some areas.

The National Weather Service posted flood warnings and advisories Monday from Maine to the Carolinas. Several inches of new rain over the next three days is expected to push many rivers over their banks.

New York City, Boston, Providence, R.I., and Portland, Maine, are among the cities expecting new all-time records for March rainfall.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has put the National Guard on alert, and soldiers are helping to fill sandbags. Road closures have been reported in several states.

Violent weather has already been blamed for a handful of injuries and damage to as many as 30 homes on Sunday night in North Carolina.
