PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC - PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) - A Georgetown County hazmat crew is at a Pawleys Island home Thursday after a woman in her 70s said she got white powder on her when she opened an envelope.
According to Midway Fire Rescue Chief Doug Eggiman said the woman called 911 after she opened the envelope she got from the U.S. Post Office in Pawleys Island. A two-man hazmat crew was called to the woman's home at the corner of Sextant Place and South Causeway Road.
Eggiman said the department set up a system to go into the home to retrieve a sample of the power so it could be analyzed.
The woman has washed the powder off and is OK at this time, Eggiman said.
Traffic on South Causeway is limited. Eggiman says emergency crews are doing everything in their power to err on the side of safety.
