Former coastal chief fights gun theft demotion

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC -

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (AP) - A former police chief along South Carolina's coast is fighting his demotion, saying he did not tell officials his gun was in a locked glove box when it was stolen last year.

William Bailey told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach that he wants his grievance hearing on being demoted from chief to lieutenant of the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department open to the public.

Bailey demotion came after a press release from city officials said his gun was in a locked glove box in December when it was stolen. The newspaper found the model truck Bailey owned didn't have a lock on the glove box.

Bailey says he told officials the glove box was secured, not locked.

A city spokeswoman wouldn't comment on the matter.
