COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A developer has filed plans with Columbia asking to build an up to 28-story tower with 600 apartments, which would be the second-tallest building in South Carolina.
The State of Columbia reports Charlotte, N.C., developer Robert Threatt Design and Development wants to build the tower near Colonial Life Arena.
Plans filed with the city indicate the tower would try to draw University of South Carolina students. There would be stores on the first floor, a swimming pool, sun-tanning area and beach volleyball courts.
The developer wouldn't talk to the newspaper. An official with the Columbia Development Corp. says the company is trying to get its finances together.
The university has seen a boom in upscale student apartments in the past decade.
