42-year-old convicted for attempting to buy drugs

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - COLUMBIA, SC (WMB) - A 42-year-old man has been convicted in federal court for attempting to purchase cocaine from an undercover agent, U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald announced Tuesday.

Bryan Deval Best, 42, of Columbia, was convicted by a jury in Columbia for attempting to purchase a kilogram of the drug.

Evidence established at the trial reveals a series of audio and video recordings of Best arranging a cocaine purchase in October 2008. The drug swap was planned in the parking lot of the Woodhill Mall Shopping Center on Garner's Ferry Road. When officers arrested Best, they seized over $21,000 in cash.

Best will be sentenced at a later date. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison and a maximum possible term of 40 years in jail.

Best's two co-defendants, residents of North Carolina, previously pleaded guilty to the federal drug distribution charge and are also awaiting sentencing.
