Beauty business booming; new Paul Mitchell School opens locally

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Paul Mitchell has opened a new school near Tanger Outlet in North Charleston.

Mitchell's CEO says the Charleston area was an easy choice because the beauty business is booming. "All of our school enrollment has gone up the last year and a half because people realize even in hard times, the salon business is still in business," said John Paul DeJoria.

Lisa Johnson, who is training at the Paul Mitchell school in Columbia, was surprised at the number of students who are college graduates. "I think maybe they were told early on, you don't need to go to beauty school. There was an aura around it, their parents said you need to go to college," Johnson said.

For Johnson, the attraction is the chance to be creative and not sit behind a desk. The earning potential may also account for a higher number of enrollees in the past year in a half. After finishing the program, stylists can earn between $50,000-$80,000 a year. The program costs $13,000 for 1500 hours of instruction. It takes most students a year to finish.
