CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Hundreds of sailors will navigate their way to the South Carolina coast for an annual race to raise money on behalf of a tall ship.
About 1,500 sailors will crew 180 boats in the inshore and offshore racing competition for the annual Charleston Race Week. The event opens with registration and a beach party on Thursday before three days of racing begin on Friday.
It's the 15th year for the event that raises money for the South Carolina Maritime Foundation that operates the tall ship Spirit of South Carolina.
The vessel is used to teach students everything from math to history and more than 5,000 students have attended foundation programs during the past three years.
