Church seeks to overturn SC judge's Erskine ruling

GREENVILLE, SC - GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina church has asked an appeals court to overturn a judge's order on the board of trustees of Erskine College.

The Greenville News reported Tuesday the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church has asked the Court of Appeals to overturn an order by Circuit Judge Eugene Griffith in a fight over who appoints trustees.

Griffin ruled this month the denomination did not have authority to remove trustees without cause. The school's alumni association and three trustees the church wanted to remove had requested the order.

The denomination voted last month to remove 14 of Erskine's 30 trustees. The church contended some professors intimidated some students because of their religious beliefs.

Denomination attorney Sandi Wilson says parts of the judge's order were vague and unconstitutional.
