GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The father of a 4-year-old South Carolina boy found dead in a thick field of kudzu has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Multiple media outlets report that Christopher Wilson was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to homicide by child abuse in the death of his son, Javeion Mayes.
Wilson reported the boy missing one morning in August 2007, starting a more than 30-hour search as temperatures soared to 100 degrees. The boy's body was found the next afternoon in a duffel bag, hidden in a kudzu field not far from his home.
Prosecutors say Wilson later admitted he had jerked the boy's arm, causing him to hit his head. Wilson said he put the child in a hot bath and found him unconscious 15 minutes later. An autopsy showed the boy drowned.
