ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man has been sentenced to life in prison in the abduction and shooting death of a disabled veteran.
Multiple media outlets reported that 37-year-old William Bradley Scruggs pleaded guilty but mentally ill Tuesday in Anderson in the August shooting death of 59-year-old Ronnie J. McCullough.
Circuit Judge Cordell Maddux sentenced Scruggs to life in prison for murder and 30 years for kidnapping and five years for possessing a weapon during a violent crime.
Investigators say Scruggs was waiting for McCullough when he returned home Aug. 5 and held him at gunpoint several hours before shooting him. A family member found McCullough several days later.
Prosecutors say forensic psychiatrists have said Scruggs has paranoid schizophrenia and an undisclosed personality disorder.
