SC Spanish teacher recognized as state's best

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - An elementary school Spanish teacher with 13 years of classroom experience has been selected as South Carolina's teacher of the year.

State schools chief Jim Rex announced on Wednesday that Kelly Nalley of Fork Shoals School in Pelzer was the winner for 2010-11.

Rex described Nalley as a consummate overachiever who continually seeks to improve her students' educational experience while finding ways to connect with them personally.

Nalley wins $25,000, a BMW to use for a year, a Dell laptop computer, a set of Michelin tires, and a Jostens ring. She will represent the state's 50,000 teachers over the next year at the state Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement.

The four other finalists will each receive $10,000. Each district teacher of the year receives $1,000.
