Despite spill, SC senator backs offshore drilling

GREENVILLE, SC - GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - The oil spill hitting the Gulf is not dissuading South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham from his support of offshore drilling.

The Greenville News reports that Graham says backing away from offshore drilling because of the spill would be like halting space exploration because of the Challenger accident. The Republican politician spoke Friday in Greenville.

The worst U.S. oil spill in decades stems from an April 20 explosion that killed 11 workers on an offshore rig.

The spill came weeks after President Barack Obama announced plans to open large areas of the Eastern Seaboard and a part of the Gulf for possible future oil drilling.

Environmentalists and some coastal state lawmakers want him to reconsider.
