Three dead after Lake Murray boat wrecks

LAKE MURRAY, SC - LAKE MURRAY, SC (WIS) - Three people are dead after two separate boating accidents on Lake Murray Saturday night, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

DNR said both accidents happened between the Lake Murray Marina and the Lighthouse Marina on the Richland County side of the lake.

Both accidents happened between 10-11:00pm, according to DNR spokesman Robert McCullough. The second accident happened about a mile away from the first.

McCullough said four boats and 13 people were involved in the accidents. Two people were initially reported dead, but McCullough later confirmed a third person died from the crash Saturday night.

One other person is in the hospital with critical injuries, McCullough said. So far there is no information available as to how the two boat wrecks happened, or whether alcohol was involved.

A WIS News 10 crew is on the scene, so look for updates as more details become available.

There have now been eleven boating fatalities in South Carolina this year, but DNR says this is the first fatal boat wreck in Richland County of 2010. However, boating accidents are nothing new on Lake Murray.

In 2006, a woman drowned in Lake Murray because of a head injury she got when a boat crashed into her pontoon boat. In 2007, two people were killed when their high-speed boat crashed on the lake. Witnesses said the speeding boat "just broke apart."
