Bond set for man charged in connection to Darlington tornado scam

DARLINGTON, SC -

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - It was a life-changing disaster that caused more than $7 million in damage, and now deputies in Darlington County allege a man has been trying to profit off of those affected by Sunday's tornado.

Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd says deputies responded to a location in Lamar after receiving reports of a suspicious person collecting donations for Darlington tornado victims.

Investigators allege the man approached a victim to solicit money and identified himself as a pastor in the Oates community. He claimed because tornado victims weren't going to receive federal aid, he was raising money for a local church and one victim who needed a hotel room.

The victim reported to investigators they were asked to make a check out to the suspect, identified as Errick B. Bryant, instead of a church.

Darlington County deputies arrested Bryant, a resident of Florence, and charged him with three counts of obtaining goods under false pretenses on Friday. Bryant, according to officials, was arrested in Hartsville and is in police custody at the Darlington County Detention Center.

According to officials at the Darlington County Detention Center, bond for Bryant has been set at $50,000.
