SC-based cutter to help in oil cleanup

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Coast Guard cutter based in South Carolina has been diverted to help clean the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The cutter Oak was returning to South Carolina from Puerto Rico when it was dispatched to Pensacola, Fla.

Cmdr. Michael Glander says the vessel will be at the spill site indefinitely. The ship had been scheduled to return to Charleston on Friday.

The Oak is a buoy tender but also has equipment that can siphon oil off the water's surface.
