COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina transportation officials say inspectors will check about 70 bridges in South Carolina that have steel girders similar to the ones found cracked on a pair of bridges on Interstate 77.
The state is closing the I-77 bridges at Exit 62 in Chester County as soon as a company is lined up to repair the spans.
Department of Transportation Maintenance Director Jim Feda (FEHD'-ah) says about 70 bridges across the state have similar girders manufactured in the 1970s.
Feda says it will take inspectors weeks to check the conditions of those girders.
Feda says the bridges are on all types of highways in South Carolina, from interstates to rural roads.
