COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Education Department is laying off 80 employees as it deals with budget problems.
The State newspaper reported Friday the layoffs come after the agency eliminated 120 positions through attrition in the last year.
State Education Superintendent Jim Rex says the agency is losing experience and expertise. Rex spent Thursday notifying the affected workers. Those include auditors, curriculum specialists and staffers who help schools implement technology.
None of the department's 450 mechanics and other bus shop employees are being laid off. The state has about 5,000 buses.
Education Department spokesman Jim Rex says agency employment has been cut by 13 percent since Rex took office in 2007.
A survey released this week showed about 2,500 teachers are expected to be laid off.
