CHICAGO (AP) — Democratic Alexi Giannoulias (jeh-NOO'-lee-ehs) is backing President Barack Obama's pick for the U.S. Supreme Court, but Republican Mark Kirk says he needs more information before deciding.
The candidates vying for Obama's old Senate seat both discussed the president's nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the high court Monday.
Giannoulias says the Senate should act swiftly to confirm Kagan. He says her reputation as a consensus builder would serve her well on the court.
But Kirk says he wants to review Kagan's writings and watch her upcoming Senate confirmation hearings before making a decision. And the five-term congressman took a swipe at those so quick to take a stand on Kagan, saying they're acting as if the confirmation hearings don't count.
