MT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A public hearing is set for May 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. to discuss proposed renovations of a stretch of Highway 41 that includes the Wando River Bridge.
The two hour session will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Department of Recreation Center on Park West Boulevard. Residents of Berkeley and Charleston counties are encouraged to attend to obtain information on how long remodeling will take, how much such a process will cost, and where said money will come from.
State Department of Transportation research dating back to 2007 states the bridge, built in 1939, is structurally deficient. Plans for renovations were first proposed in 2004 and are now in the final phases, per department representatives.
The bridges swing span is among a top renovation priority.
According to the State Department of Transportation, roughly 3,400 people use the bridge every day.
