SC Democrat tells staff to stop flier handout

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The top Democrat in the South Carolina House told his staff to stop handing out literature on a campaign fundraiser on the House floor.

House Democratic Caucus staffers spent part of Wednesday morning passing out bright green fliers for a fundraiser for state Rep. Anton Gunn.

House Democratic Caucus Leader Harry Ott of St. Matthews said that he instructed his staff to stop handing out the material after a reporter questioned the practice. Ott said nothing in the law or House rules prevents handing out that kind of material, but legislators have to hold themselves to a higher standard.

Langley Republican and House Ethics Committee Chairman Roland Smith said he'd advise members not to hand out such items on the floor.
