1 dead after police shoot suspect outside Summerville High School

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Summerville police shot and killed a suspect outside Summerville High School around 11:00 a.m. Monday, according to Captain Jon Rogers.

The Dorchester County Coroner's office has identified the suspect as 29-year-old Garrick Heckstall.

According to Rogers, Heckstall held up a Kangaroo gas station at 1365 Boonehill Rd. before the shooting. He then kidnapped a woman outside the store, robbed and sexually assaulted her.

Summerville police say Heckstall drew a weapon when they found him outside the high school. They shot him several times, Rogers said. Heckstall died several hours later.

Summerville High School was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, according to Dorchester District 2 spokeswoman Pat Raynor.

Parents of students at the school said they received notices from the school's automated system that the school was on lockdown.

The State Law Enforcement Division is handling the investigation into the shooting because it involved police officers. Summerville police are investigating the robberies and sexual assault.
