COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Education Department says 124 schools have won Red Carpet awards for the way they welcome parents and other visitors.
The agency named the schools Monday. They include six primary schools, 74 elementary, 22 middle, 14 high, and one technical school.
Red Carpet coordinator Frank White says Greenville County led the awards with 15 winners. Greenville County is the state's largest district. Richland District 2 and Spartanburg District 6 each had six winners. Berkeley, Kershaw, Lexington 1, Oconee and Richland 1 each had five.
The schools were chosen from 262 applicants. The selection process included anonymous phone calls and visits from judges.
Winning schools receive a red carpet with the state seal for their lobbies.
