COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Owners of some of South Carolina's most expensive oceanfront property hope state lawmakers will spare them from new beach setback lines that they say could make it tougher to sell or rebuild after a hurricane.
The House on Tuesday could take up a measure exempting private Fripp Island from new beach construction setback rules.
Regulators say the bill marks the first time the Legislature has gone this far to intrude on the state's policy of building restrictions in erosion-prone coastal areas.
Property owners worry that limits will make it tougher to sell homes or rebuild them.
The new rules went into effect in October and property owners want legislators to change the law for the 3,000-acre island.
