MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - It's a crowded political platform on the South Carolina coast as nine GOP candidates for Congress gather for a debate.
Charleston County GOP Chairwoman Lin Bennett says all nine candidates in the 1st Congressional District have indicated they will attend Tuesday's debate on the USS Yorktown in Mount Pleasant.
Incumbent Republican congressman Henry Brown is not seeking re-election and is instead running for Berkeley County supervisor.
There are some well-known political names in the congressional field. They include state Rep. Tim Scott; Charleston County Councilman Paul Thurmond, son of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond; and businessman Carroll Campbell III, son of the late South Carolina Gov. Carroll Campbell.
