CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A colonial-era plantation on the South Carolina coast is offering visitors an experience in planting rice.
On Tuesday, a costumed interpreter at Middleton Place explains how Carolina Gold rice was planted during the 18th and the 19th centuries.
Plantation visitors will learn about the African origins of rice in the American colonies. If they want, visitors can get dirty in the plantation's demonstration rice field to assist with the planting.
Later this year, traditional harvesting methods will be used to bring in the crop.
