ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina congressman diagnosed with Parkinson's disease is lashing out at the National Republican Congressional Committee for issuing a statement he is losing his memory.
Democratic Rep. John Spratt on Tuesday characterized the GOP statement that called him an "amnesiac" as "a sly, underhanded reference" to his ailment.
Spratt says he has only a slight tremor in his hand and slightly stooped posture but no loss of mental capacity.
The GOP statement issued Monday about the 67-year-old House Budget Committee chairman contained six bold-lettered allegations that he's forgetting what's happening in Washington.
Republican spokesman Andy Sere said Tuesday that Spratt is fit to serve but is not representing his constituents.
