MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - There's a birthday party scheduled for 1 of South Carolina's noted seaside resorts.
The Caravelle Resort in Myrtle Beach celebrates its 50th anniversary on Thursday, marked in part by the reading of a proclamation from Gov. Mark Sanford.
The Caravelle, which now has more than 340 efficiency rooms and suites as well as 250 condominium units in nine buildings, first opened in 1960.
It has been the site of a number of firsts in tourism in Myrtle Beach, which is the heart of South Carolina's $18.4 billion tourism industry.
In 1962, the Caravelle became the first local hotel to offer a vacation golf package and a covered pool. In 2007, the resort underwent $8 million in renovations.
