CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina environmental officials have fined a company $28,000 for safety issues found in the way it handles hazardous waste.
Detyens Shipyards agreed to the fine from the state Health and Environmental Control Department.
Agency filings say Detyens failed to properly mark hazardous waste containers and to ensure that the containers were not stacked more than two high without prior written approval. The company also failed to keep a hazardous waste container closed during storage.
In addition to the fine, the commercial shipyard also agreed to take steps to ensure future management and design for hazardous waste storage areas.
