Former Terrier hired as assistant

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Former Wofford standout Shane Nichols has joined the team as an assistant basketball coach.

Nichols takes over for Jay McAuley, who joined the coaching staff at Gardner-Webb.

Nichols spent three seasons with the Terriers after transferring from St. Peters and started 76 of 82 games for Wofford. He averaged more than 13 points a game his senior season in 2007-08. His highlight that season was a last-second tip-in to defeat Purdue.

Nichols is in Wofford's all-time top five in career 3-pointers made and 3-point shooting percentage.

The Terriers and coach Mike Young won the Southern Conference tournament title last season and earned their first trip to the NCAA tournament. Wofford fell to Wisconsin the opening round.
