CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Final rehearsals are under way on the South Carolina coast as opening day for the Spoleto Festival USA approaches.
The Charleston festival opens Friday with ticket sales running ahead of last year and a newly renovated theater to present the first opera ever performed in the American colonies.
The Dock Street Theatre, where many Spoleto performances are staged, recently underwent an $18 million makeover. It is located on the site of the nation's first theater.
To celebrate, the festival this year is reviving "Flora," the first opera performed in the colonies.
Spoleto runs from Friday through June 13.
