COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina lawmakers have begun working on a compromise version of a state budget that includes new limits on abortion for state workers and family members who are victims of rape or incest.
The conference committee on the nearly $5 billion spending plan met briefly Wednesday.
The biggest differences in the proposals in the House and Senate continue to be the state employees' health insurance coverage of abortions that the House wants to limit and more than $50 million in fees increases the Senate wants
The panel of 3 House members and three senators met for less than 15 minutes before adjourning. They expect to begin budget negotiations in earnest after Wednesday's legislative session.
