Air Force medical unit from SC heads to Haiti

SHAW AFB - SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) - Some 20 members of an Air Force medical group from South Carolina are heading to Haiti on a mission to support a military humanitarian mission.

Air Force spokesman Airman 1st Class Daniel Phelps says the team is part of the 20th Medical Group at Shaw Air Force Base. They are scheduled to leave on Thursday.

The unit consists of optometry, dental and general health specialists. They will work at a clinic set up about 60 miles north of Port-au-Prince to assist those still needing care after the devastating earthquake.

The airmen were to work in Haiti for about two and a half weeks and treat up to 700 patients daily.
