COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State Treasurer Converse Chellis is trying to hold onto his job in what's become a nasty Republican contest filled with negative ads and charges.
Chellis faces Curtis Loftis in the June 8 Republican primary. Democrats didn't field a candidate in the contest so the winner is likely the state's treasurer.
The Legislature elected Chellis to the job in 2007 after Republican state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel resigned after a drug charge indictment.
It's the first statewide bid for Chellis. He's a certified public accountant.
It's also the first statewide bid for Loftis, who built 1 of the state's largest pest control companies.
