Death threat made against state attorney general

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster is under state police protection after authorities learned of a threat made against his life.

State Law Enforcement Division Chief Reggie Lloyd told The Associated Press on Thursday that the Republican prosecutor has been under guard by state police since earlier this week.

Lloyd says a note threatening McMaster's life was retrieved earlier this week from a drop box at a bank in the Charleston area. McMaster met with former county Republican Party chairmen in Charleston on Wednesday.

Lloyd declined to discuss the note's contents. He says he plans to release details Friday along with security camera footage from the bank.

McMaster is one of four candidates seeking the Republican nomination for governor.
