COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A new book headed to high school libraries features the first-hand experiences of 49 military veterans from South Carolina held as prisoners of war.
The book titled "Heroes ... Survivors" will be released on Friday during a ceremony at the South Carolina Military Museum.
Attendees will include veterans held prisoner during World War II and the Korean War. State schools chief Jim Rex will host the event.
The first copy will go to a Columbia high school. Copies will eventually go to the libraries of each of the state's public high schools.
The project involved the state chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War and the state education agency. Organizers are seeking additional funding to send copies to middle schools, private schools and public libraries statewide.
