ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (AP) - The annual Atlantic Beach Bikefest is under way on the South Carolina coast, although there seem to be fewer bikers this year.
Multiple media outlets report the annual Memorial Day weekend gathering of bikers got under way Thursday. Flea market operator John Sketers says things have been quiet.
But Eva McMillan says things will pick up as the weekend progresses. McMillan is business manager at the Carolina Knight Riders bike club, which helped start the event 30 years ago.
In 2008, neighboring Myrtle Beach passed laws to try to get rid of 2 springtime bike rallies. The Cruisin' the Coast rally was held earlier this month, but most bikers avoided Myrtle Beach.
Officials estimated about 175,000 people came to the Atlantic Beach Bikefest last year, although in previous years as many 400,000 came.
