SC trooper fires on SUV as it flees traffic stop

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina state trooper working traffic for the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest has been placed on administrative leave after he fired three shots at a fleeing vehicle.

Authorities told multiple media outlets the trooper's arm was inside the SUV as it drove away about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators say the trooper was directing traffic when the driver of the SUV hesitated to follow the officer's instructions.

Authorities say the trooper asked the driver to roll down the window and smelled marijuana smoke.

The SUV was found abandoned a few hours later with no sign anyone inside was injured.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
