HUNTING ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - A 9-year-old swimmer went missing on Hunting Island around 2 p.m. Monday.
The family has identified the boy as Tyreck Parker, a second grader at Mossy Oaks Elementary School.
Hunting Island State Park rangers immediately started searching when Parker's friends reported him missing. The Department of Natural Resources, Lady's Island - St. Helena firefighters, the U.S. Coast Guard and Fripp Island firefighter joined in the search shortly after.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Charleston was in the air searching until crews had to call off the search at dark. They plan on being back out there bright and early Tuesday to help find the boy.
Monday afternoon, other swimmers reported a strong pull in the water.
"Mother nature has been our largest adversary today with the day light going away and the tides moving in as they do along with the under currents and cross currents," said Lee Levesque of the Lady's Island - St. Helena Fire District. "After five hours of searching we have decided to transfer from a search and rescue to a recovery."
