Eckstrom seeks 3rd term as SC comptroller general

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Republican Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom faces a single primary challenger in South Carolina in his bid for a third term.

Mike Meilinger, a Greenville certified public accountant, is seeking his first statewide office in next Tuesday's Republican primary. The winner will face Democrat Robert Barber, who is unopposed.

The 61-year-old Eckstrom said Tuesday he wants a third term to make sure the public has greater access to financial information on how colleges are spending money.

The 42-year-old Meilinger said he'd focus on fraud, waste and abuse.

Both men are certified public accountants.

The comptroller general is the state's chief accounting job and it pays $92,007 annually.
