EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN FOR YOUR COUNTY

Know what to do, where to go, and emergency contact information for your county during a hurricane.

CHARLESTON COUNTY:

EMERGENCY INFORMATION:

If a mandatory evacuation is ordered and you do not have transportation, buses will be provided to take you from designated pick-up points to the nearest available shelter. To find your nearest pick-up location, log on to www.charlestoncounty.org or contact Charleston County Emergency Preparedness at (843)202-7400.

  • If you are disabled and cannot get to the nearest evacuation pick-up point, contact the Charleston County Emergency Citizen's Information Line at (843) 202-7100**. A vehicle will be dispatched to transport you.

Buses will not service pick-up points during a voluntary evacuation. However, if you need transportation to the nearest shelter during a voluntary evacuation, contact the Charleston County Emergency Citizen's Information Line at (843) 202-7100**.

EVACUATION ROUTES:

YOUNGES ISLAND, MEGGETT, HOLLYWOOD, RAVENEL:  

Use SC 165 to US 17, then US 17 South to SC 64.

JOHNS ISLAND, KIAWAH ISLAND AND SEABROOK: 

Use SC 700 to Road S-20 (Bohicket Road) to US 17. Take US 17 South to SC 64 to Walterboro, then onto N. Augusta.

JAMES ISLAND AND FOLLY BEACH:

Use SC 171 to US 17. Take US 17 South to I-526 to the reverse lanes of I-26.

CITY OF CHARLESTON:

If you are in West Ashley, take US 61 to US 78, through Aiken and North Augusta. If you are Downtown, take the normal lanes of I-26.

NORTH CHARLESTON:

Take US 52 (Rivers Avenue) to US 78 to US 178 to Orangeburg. You may continue on US 52 to US 176 or continue north on US 52.

The right lane of US 52 at Goose Creek will continue to Moncks Corner where it will be directed onto SC 6 towards Columbia.

The left lane of US 52 at Goose Creek will go onto US 176 to Columbia.

Evacuees using SC 642 will travel West toward Summerville and take road S-22 (Old Orangeburg Rd) to US 78 West.

EDISTO ISLAND, ADAMS RUN:

Take SC 174 to US 17. Then take US 17 South to SC 64. This will lead to Walterboro, and then onto North Augusta.

EAST COOPER:

Evacuees leaving Mount Pleasant will take I-526 or US 17 South to I-26.

 Those leaving Sullivan's Island will use SC 703 to I-526 business to access I-526, then I-26.

Evacuees from the Isle of Palms will use the Isle of Palms connector (SC 517) to go to US 17, where the right lane will turn North on US 17, then proceed to SC 41, to SC 402, then to US 52 to SC 375, then US 521, to SC 261 to US 378 to Columbia.

 Evacuees using the left lanes of the Isle of Palms connector will turn left to go to I-526 and then onto I-26.

Evacuees on I-526 approaching I-26 from East Cooper will be directed to the normal lanes of I-26 if in the right lane of I-526.

Those in the left lane of I-526 will be directed into the reversed lanes of I-26.

AWENDAW AND MCCLELLANVILLE:

Take SC 45 to US 52 where they will be directed right onto US 52 to SC 375 to US 521 to SC261 to US 378 to Columbia.

Once the Emergency Operations Center is activated, Dorchester County residents can call 843 832-0393 for assistance. If a mandatory evacuation is ordered for the SC Central Coast region, the following Dorchester County residents may be required to relocate to a safer structure. Stay tuned to Live 5 News for specific instructions. 

  • For Category 1-3 Hurricanes, persons living in low-lying areas along Rantowles Creek.
  • For Category 4-5 Hurricanes, persons living along County Line Rd. between the Edisto River and SC 165 and those living in low-lying areas along Rantowles Creek.
  • For Tropical Storms and all Hurricanes: All Mobile and Manufactured Homes and other lesser constructed homes vulnerable to sustained 40 mph or greater winds.

Take US 61 to US 78 through Aiken and North Augusta or 78 to 178 to I-20.

 RIDGEVILLE

Follow 178 to I-20.

BERKELEY COUNTY:

EMERGENCY INFORMATION:

 Once the Emergency Operations Center is activated, Berkeley County residents can call 843-719-4800 for assistance.

Residents are encouraged to have an evacuation plan in place and even drive their planned route ahead of time. Those who do not have transportation of their own can call 843-719-4800 to coordinate transportation to a local shelter.

EVACUATION ROUTES:

 DANIEL ISLAND

Take I-526 to I-26 or follow Clements Ferry Rd. to SC 41 to SC 402 to US 52.

 GOOSE CREEK AND MONCKS CORNER

The right lane of US 52 at Goose Creek will continue to Moncks Corner where it will be directed onto SC 6 toward Columbia.

The left lane of US 52 at Goose Creek will go onto US 176 to Columbia.

BONNEAU AND ST. STEPHEN

Take US 52 to SC 375, then US 521 to SC 261 to US 378 to Columbia.

GEORGETOWN COUNTY:

EMERGENCY INFORMATION:

 Transportation to an emergency shelter will be provided on a limited basis and only if you have no other means to get to a shelter. Call the Emergency Management Department at 843-545-3273 for information on when transportation will become available. Pick-up points are:

  • Food Lion - Hwy 707 & Hwy 17, Murrells Inlet
  • Waccamaw Middle School - Sandy Island Road, Pawleys Island
  • Waccamaw Elementary School - Waverly Road, Pawleys Island
  • St. Mary´s AME Church - 8833 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island
  • Old Wal-Mart - North Fraser Street, Georgetown
  • Food Lion - Hwy 17S in Maryville, Georgetown
  • St. Stephen AME Church - 1915 Winyah Street, Georgetown

 For re-entry following a disaster, residents and business owners will be allowed access into the area once it is deemed safe. Law enforcement officers will establish and staff checkpoints during re-entry. To gain access to their property, owners must have a copy of their property title, a tax receipt, or utility bill bearing the address of the property, and a picture ID. A driver's license showing a physical address is acceptable. Stay tuned to your local media, or call the Disaster Call Center at 843-545-3273, for re-entry information.

 Take US 17 South through Georgetown, then take US 521 to Manning to SC 261 and US 378 to Columbia.

From the City of Georgetown, take Black River Road to US 701 to SC 51 to SC 41 and US 378 to Columbia.

Instructions will be given via signs and highway advisory radio.
