Georgia shrimping season about to open

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says the state's waters will open for shrimping next week.

DNR Commissioner Chris Clark says trawlers will be allowed to operate in territorial waters that extend 3 miles offshore. People also will be allowed to use cast nets and beach seines to catch shrimp in state waters when the season opens Tuesday.

Marine biologist Julie Califf says the DNR had sold 116 trawler licenses by Thursday morning, including 26 to shrimpers from Northeast Florida and the Carolinas.

She says no shrimpers displaced by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have bought a license to fish in Georgia waters.

Patrick Geer, DNR chief of marine fisheries, says the opening was set after officials reviewed data measuring shrimp abundance and size.
